News Conference announcing Fr. Steven Maekawa, OP as the next bishop for the Diocese of Fairbanks

On behalf of the faithful of the Diocese of New Ulm, I extend my sincere congratulations to Bishop-elect Steve Maekawa on his appointment as the Bishop of Fairbanks, Alaska. Bishop-elect Maekawa is an excellent choice by Pope Francis to serve the largest diocese in the United States, which I served before being appointed Bishop of New Ulm.

Pope Francis has named Rev. Steven Maekawa, O.P., a priest of the Dominican Province of the Holy Name of Jesus, Western Province, Oakland, California, and current pastor of Holy Family Old Cathedral in Anchorage, Alaska, as the new Bishop of Fairbanks. The appointment was publicized in Washington, D.C. on July 11, 2023, by Cardinal-designate Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States.
