For the 4th Sunday of Advent and Christmas, I visited the villages of Kaltag, Nulato, and Koyokuk. Using one of Fr. Thinh’s snowmachines, I rode over 100 miles on the Yukon River over the course of five days. Christmas was at St. Teresa Church in Kaltag. On the afternoon of Christmas Day, Fr. Thinh rode down from Nulato so that I could follow him back. A veteran snowmachiner, Fr. Thinh expertly picked his way over the 34-mile trail which ran on the river and along its banks. That evening, we were invited to a parishioner’s home for a fantastic Christmas dinner of ham, turkey, and all the fixings. Christmas in remote Alaska was quiet and filled with many blessings.
