All Rural Bush Village Parishes

Heating Fuel

We are all experiencing the same pain at the pump; the cost of gasoline and diesel are the highest they have ever been in this country.  The cost of heating oil in the remote areas of Alaska can cost as much as $5.25 per gallon! This year, we expect the price to rise to $6.00 or more per gallon in Ruby and other outlying areas.

Many of you may have read in our March 2008 Alaskan Shepherd newsletter that the St. Peter in Chains parish in Ruby installed solar panels last year to help lower their electric costs.  The electric utility is also dependent on high cost per gallon diesel which is transferred to the consumer in a high kilowatt rate for electricity.

Thirty-seven (37) rural and remote parishes throughout the missionary Diocese of Fairbanks have relied upon subsidies for many years just for basic ministries and to keep the church and parish houses warm.  The rapidly rising cost of fuel today is another hard blow to their overstretched budgets.  Any assistance you may provide for heating oil at this time would be greatly appreciated.  May the Spirit of the Risen Christ live within you, and fill you with the gift of Love, the blessing of Hope, and the promise of Peace.

Aniak - Saint Theresa

Snowmobile

Sister Marian Leaf, OSF and Father Stan Jaszek, a Polish priest, continue to minister in Aniak, Alaska, a Yup'ik Eskimo remote village located on the south bank of the Kuskokwim River in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in the interior of the State.  With your help, the Saint Theresa parish would like to replace the unreliable snowmachine that they have tried to use for the past several years.  With temperatures far below zero, it is of utmost importance to have a snowmobile that will get Sr. Marian or Fr. Stan to their other destinations of Kalskag, about 26 miles and Holy Cross, about 40 miles as the crow flies. They would appreciate your assistance to help replace the older snowmobile for their visits to parishioners and the sick in the long Arctic winter months. The cost including shipping to Aniak will be approximately $7,500.

Galena - St. John Berchmans

4x4 ATV and Snow Plow

Galena is predominantly an Athabascan Indian village located on the right bank of the middle Yukon River.  Br. Justin's bones are not taking to the -40 degree (below zero) weather like they used to.  He would appreciate your help to pay for the snow plow to use at the church, residence and the Kateri Tekakwitha Center in Galena.  He has also found what is called a K truck, which is a 4x4 ATV with an enclosed cab and has a large cargo bed, and also gets up to 50 mpg.  This would replace the old and worn 4-wheeler that has more than seen its day.

The cost of the snow plow is $3,700 and the K truck is $6,250 plus shipping to Galena.  Please say a prayer and let us know if you can help with these acquisitions.  Thank you for your consideration of this request.

Hooper Bay - Little Flower of Jesus

New Floor Covering

Hooper Bay is a Central Yup'ik Eskimo village on the Bering Sea Coast in western Alaska.  For the past several years, many have noticed that the flooring in the church is in need of replacement.  The tile project is now finished and Fr. Gregg let us know that the floor looks beautiful.  Bishop Kettler recently confirmed 4 at the first Mass in the church after the project was finished.  The cost of the project was greater than anticipated or budgeted, which was $3,500 for materials and $1,060 for labor.  In fact, materials cost a little over $6,300 and paid labor for the project amounted to about $1,400.  The parish was also gifted donated labor by a local organization that amounted to $1,600.  This is the first replacement of flooring since the church was built in the early 1970s.    The parish would appreciate your help to cover some of the expenses incurred in this much needed flooring repair.  Thank you for your consideration of this request and our sincere gratitude to those who have helped to date on the project.

Kalskag - Immaculate Conception Church

Water improvements

The parish of Immaculate Conception at Kalskag has been working on a water improvement project this past year. Originally, it was estimated to cost approximately $12,000 for the project. After nearing completion of the project, it was learned that a sophisticated treatment system would be required to have potable water. With the generous help of our benefactors, we are able to add this system, which will make the total cost approximately $19,000.

Date Requested by Parish - initial request December 2005 - updated April 29, 2008

We would like to extend a very gracious and sincere thank you to the very generous donors who are helping to make this project come to fruition. May God bless you all for your kindness and generosity.

Nulato - Our Lady of the Snows

Riverboat Outboard Motor

Nulato is a Koyukon Athapaskan Village on the right bank of the Yukon River. On July 31, 1877 pioneer Archbishop Charles Seghers and Fr. Mandart wintered in the village and founded the first church in Alaska at Nulato and dedicated it to Our Lady of the Snows. Brother Bob Ruzicka, OFM, a Franciscan, travels by boat in the summertime between parishes along the mighty Yukon River. A replacement boat has been procured for him, but the old 1986 Mercury outboard has just about seen its day. The estimated cost for a new motor, including shipping, is $8,900.00. We would appreciate it if you could please help Bro. Bob purchase a new fuel efficient motor to help keep him on the river to visit other parishes this summer.

Date Requested by Parish - initial request April 4, 2006 - updated April 29, 2008

A very gracious thank you to the donors who have sent gifts to start raising funds for the riverboat motor. The delivery of the boat has been delayed due to circumstances beyond our control. We hope to purchase the outboard motor in August and send the boat out to Br. Bob for next season's visits to parishes along the Yukon River.

Musical Instruments & Books

Tanana is located in Interior Alaska about two miles west of the junction of the Tanana and Yukon Rivers, about 130 air miles west of Fairbanks.  The parish of St. Aloysius are in need of more musical support in their prayer worship.  Their old faithful pump organ has only one working pedal and needs replacement.  A youth group from Fairbanks is expected in the village this summer to help with a summer vacation bible camp. If you would like to help them make a joyful noise this summer and throughout the year, please donate to assist them to purchase a new keyboard, nylon stringed guitar and liturgical music binder and hymnals.  The cost for these items, including shipping to Tanana, would be approximately $850.  Thank you for your consideration to make a donation for this request.
