Current Parish Needs
The following list itemizes requests made by parishes throughout the missionary Diocese of Fairbanks for specific items the parish currently needs, but does not have the full funding to purchase. Please use the credit card form at the bottom of the list if you wish to make an online credit card donation for a parish need item. If you wish to donate for a parish need item by mailing a check, please note the restricted item in the memo field and additional details in a letter. Here in Fairbanks, we already had -35 degrees (below zero) for this winter in mid November. There have been major wind and snow storms out along the western coast as well. We are getting a little reprieve, as it is still only 10 degrees below zero today, December 17th. We are fortunate as so far, we have had a mild winter. We will likely be moving toward the -35 to -55 degrees (below zero) throughout the next couple of months.
In the remote village locations where fuel was barged in this summer, the cost of heating oil can cost as much as $7.75 per gallon! Even though we are seeing lower prices around the country, these exorbitant prices will remain.
Thirty-seven (37) rural and remote parishes throughout the missionary Diocese of Fairbanks have relied upon subsidies for many years just for basic ministries and to keep the church and parish houses warm. The high cost of fuel again this past summer is a difficult blow to their budgets that are overstretched. Any assistance you may provide for heating oil at this time would be greatly appreciated. May God's peace and joy bless you and keep you warm throughout this winter.

Aniak - Saint Theresa
Living Room Window
At the Aniak parish, the seal on the upstairs living room window is in bad shape and the cold, frigid air is coming through. Although the existing window is double pane, the seal between the two glass windows does not work any longer either. A new energy efficient window would not only keep out the cold arctic air, but would reduce heating costs as well. Sr. Marian usually has to scrape frost off the inside window and she says that there is so much fog in between the two panes that one can barely see out. The window is approximately 42 inches by 36 inches. The new energy efficient window with a 50 year warranty and made in Fairbanks, Alaska for the cold climates would cost approximately $500 plus $150 for shipping. 13 gifts of $50 would let the light shine into Sr. Marian's residence in Aniak and keep her warmer.

Snowmobile
Sister Marian Leaf, OSF and Father Stan Jaszek, a Polish priest, continue to minister in Aniak, Alaska, a Yup'ik Eskimo remote village located on the south bank of the Kuskokwim River in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in the interior of the State. With your help, the Saint Theresa parish would like to replace the unreliable snowmobile that they have tried to use for the past several years. With temperatures far below zero, it is of utmost importance to have a snowmobile that will get Sr. Marian or Fr. Stan to their other destinations of Kalskag, about 26 miles and Holy Cross, about 40 miles as the crow flies. They would appreciate your assistance to help replace the older snowmobile for their visits to parishioners and the sick in the long Arctic winter months. The cost including shipping to Aniak will be approximately $7,500.

Heating Oil Pump
At the parish in Holy Cross, located 279 miles upriver on the Yukon River, a large heating oil tank is used for bulk storage. This large bulk tank allows the parish to buy larger quantities of heating oil when the price is better. The parish needs some parts to connect the large tank to the smaller tank feeding the heaters in the church and residence. Currently, a manual pump is used to transfer heating oil from one tank to the other when the smaller one is empty. In an effort to help prevent the church and residence from freezing by keeping a steady flow of heating oil to the smaller tank, about $1300 of equipment and parts are needed to do this job. Thirteen gifts of $100 would make this a reality for the parish. Please consider this option in your charitable giving plan.

Mountain Village - St. Lawrence Church
Snowmobile
The ministers who work with the parishes in Mountain Village and Pilot Station often times go back and forth by snowmobile in the winter. The distance between the parishes is about 30 miles as the raven flies. As you may know, temperatures can drop way below zero, so a safe snowmobile is a high priority. Using a snowmobile that is safe and reliable is necessary and will also help save some costs for the parishes by not having to fly between the villages. The one that has been used for the past several years is beginning to break down and not getting the same gas mileage as it should. Fr. Stan predicts that the motor will soon give out. 45 gifts of $200 would purchase a new two rider snowmobile that will cost approximately $9,000 including shipping to the village and keep Fr. Stan and Sr. Marian safe on the trail for their ministry.

Pilot Station - St. Charles Spinola Church
Monitor Heaters
The parish at Pilot Station needed two heating monitors for the church building. For the past few years, they have had only one that was still working but now that one is broken. Fr. Stan tried repeatedly to fix it on a number of occasions, but it wasn't a permanent fix. As winter is already here, they purchased the two monitors but would like your help to recuperate the costs spent. The two new efficient monitor heaters will help the parish save on their heating oil costs, but they are still very expensive. The two Monitor heaters cost $3,518 to purchase and ship to the village.

Diocesan Religious Education
Echoes of Faith Plus
Sister Dorothy Giloley, SSJ, is the
Director of Religious Education for the Diocese, who works with 9
parishes on the road system and 13 remote village parishes from McGrath
on the Kuskokwim River to the far reaches of Little Diomede near Russia
and to the northern tip of Alaska at Barrow. Sr. Dorothy has been
using the Echoes of Faith Plus program for catechist formation and
would like to purchase 3 sets to loan to parishes. Each set costs
approximately $575. She would appreciate your donation to help the
catechists throughout the Diocese to spread the Good News of the Gospel.

Wireless Interconnected Smoke Detectors
For Remote Village Parishes
Fire is always a serious and increased
hazard for our remote village parishes. In many areas, there is no such
thing as a regularly staffed volunteer fire department. Awareness of
conditions therefore is of utmost importance. The most significant
instant safety upgrades we can provide for our rural churches would be
a wireless system of smoke detectors that are electronically
interconnected and battery powered. With this system, if any one of the
smoke detectors sounds, all of the smoke detectors coded to the same
frequency also sound. Example - If a fire begins in the church, that
detector in the area sounds. The signal sent by that first detector
then activates the interconnected smoke detectors, including the
residence next door. The occupants of both church and residence now
receive much earlier warning of a fire giving more precious time to
take appropriate action. Installation is also simple as the smoke
detectors are battery powered and may be easily installed.
On average, four (4) alarms would be needed for each remote village parish at a cost of approximately $200 per set. We would appreciate your consideration to make a donation to purchase a set of the interconnected smoke alarm systems for one of the 37 remote village parishes with this safety upgrade that may save lives and limit potential damage to structures and belongings.
